Students can learn many writing techniques and styles in Literature classes. Edgar Allan Poe’s style is often overlooked in English Curriculum. Edgar Allan Poe, an American poet, writer, literary critic, and editor, lived between January 19, 1809, and October 7, 1849. Poe’s writing is known for its Gothic fiction and other elements. Edgar Allan Poe is a great addition to English Literature. Poe is known for his Gothic writings, first detective stories and analysis of psychology.
Poe’s story is the first detective story ever written. Poe wrote the first detective novel, “The Murders in Rue Morgue”. Poe created a model for future detective fiction. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, years later, said that Poe “was the model for all of time”. Poe set the standard for detective tales, including Sherlock Holmes and American culture. Edgar Allan Poe introduced Tales of Ratiocination and deduction reasoning. Poe begins with a story that uses deduction reasoning to analyze the workings of the brain. He begins his story with the statement, “The knowledge necessary is what you observe.” Because the game is what he’s after, our player doesn’t limit himself. Nor does he exclude deductions made from external sources because of this. Poe was able to use clues in order to identify the murderer. Edgar Allan Poe came up with The Tales of Ratiocination. The tale of Ratiocination, a detective tale, is one that focuses on the hunt for a solution. Dupin and the reader must acknowledge each detail, regardless of how minor it is. The audience should use their understanding of the human mind to solve this mystery. Students are forced to read and think about the stories more deeply. Poe is the only author who has frightened his audience as much as Poe. Poe’s writing was heavily influenced from the tragic events of his life, filled with heartbreak, tragedy, and fear. Poe, an incredible author who grew up in the Romantic Period, was also a dark writer due to his unhappy life. Edgar Allan Poe’s Gothic works dealt with topics such as decomposition and the resurrection of the dead. Gothic literature includes dark, picturesque scenes, startling, melodramatic storylines, and an atmosphere of fear, mystery, and exoticism. Poe and Gothic stories are frequently associated. Examples include “The Cask Amontillado”, the Masque of the Red Death”, as well as “The Fall of the House of Usher”. Readers can identify Gothic elements while reading stories. The Fall of the House of Usher tells a tale of incest, illness, and madness in an old, dark house. Roderick Usher’s misery begins the story. The narrator is also struck by the depressing and sad vibe the house emits. In the story the narrator states, “I am struck by the depressing atmosphere that the house emits. I see the bleak walls and vacant windows. I also notice the rank sedges. And a few white trees trunks. With an utter depression in my soul, which is no better than the dream of a reveller after consuming opium. Poe wrote many Gothic pieces, like “The Raven”. In “The Raven”, you will find elements such as romance, death and madness. The narrator can’t concentrate on reading a book in a dark, rainy night. The narrator, while thinking about the death of his wife, hears noises. The narrator is driven crazy by a raven who comes into the house and says nevermore over and over again. Poe’s work teaches students about Gothic literature. Edgar Allan Poe’s work is amazing, but he can also combine psychology with horror. Poe’s “psychological insight and depth” has reshaped the horror genre. Poe explored mental disorders (mental illness) in Gothic literature to better understand them and to explore the truths about humanity. Poe made note of this in “The Tell-Tale Heart”. The narrator refused to admit that he’d committed the crime. The book says: “TRUE!”-NERVOUS – I was and still am a very nervous person. But why would you call me mad? The disease was not destroying my senses. It had only sharpened them. In the end, he is unable to hold his guilt any more and tells them the truth. Edgar Allan Poe’s work should be part of the English curriculum. Poe’s work can help students develop their skills in evaluating cases. Scholars also gain more knowledge about Gothic literature. Poe’s work has changed the way writing is done, although it may not be appreciated to its full potential. It is no secret that Poe has had a profound impact on American literature. Poe is still being read 160 years later.
